Permits granted for Malay Choir Road March and Klopse Parade

The Cape Malay Choir Board Road March and Tweede Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade – two events that showcase Cape Town’s cultural, vibrant heritage and traditions – are taking place this week. The City would like to advise spectators and residents on event logistics.
The City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office has finalised permits for the Cape Malay Choir Board Road March and the Cape Town Street Parade.
‘This is always a special time for thousands of our residents who get the opportunity to celebrate and honour longstanding traditions that form part of the fabric of this great city. As the City of Cape Town, we are proud to collaborate with the Cape Malay Choir Board and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association by providing financial and logistical support to ensure we continue to honour these traditions for many more years to come. The City has worked diligently with the organisations and other roleplayers to put measures in place to ensure roads are clear for the troupes, and for the spectators to enjoy the festivities in a safe and family-friendly environment,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.
The Cape Malay Road March will usher in the New Year with traditional Malay music, drums and marching when several choirs take to the streets on 31 December 2024.
The evening will begin with a procession from Rose Street in Bo-Kaap at 21:30 before making its way down Wale Street for a finish in Adderley Street. The event is set to finish at 04:00 on 1 January 2025.
Several roads in the CBD will be closed from 18:00 on 31 December 2024 because of the road march.

Cape Town Street ParadeOn Saturday, 4 January 2025, the Cape Town Street Parade, also known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar, will welcome the New Year in the streets of the CBD.
Approximately 20 000 performers from 18 minstrel troupes will entertain crowds with the rhythmic symphony of banjos, guitars, ghoema drums, trombones and tubas.
Starting from District Six around midday, the procession of performers will entertain crowds along the historic route before they end in Bo-Kaap. In their dazzling colourful costumes, the performers will also put on a show in front of the historic City Hall and along Darling Street, where thousands of spectators will gather.
The event will have a significant impact on several roads around the CBD on Saturday, 4 January 2025 between 06:00 and 23:55.
